All hikes meet in the pool area.
7:30 am: Easy Hike (1 hour)
Break away from your usual routine and start your day with a gentle hour-long stroll before breakfast. Your path will vary, but usually takes you along the river where you can see the hot steam rising into the cool morning air.
9:30 am: Intermediate and Challenging Hikes (2-3 hours)
Explore the forest, hike to one of the four nearby sources of the Rio Caliente, or climb the surrounding ridges to see spectacular views of nearby Mount Tequila, the dormant volcano. The day's destination is decided by group consensus-two guides split the group to offer different levels of effort.
What to wear and carry
- Hiking boots with ankle protection—the terrain is rugged, steep and rocky; some trails cross the river, so waterproof boots are recommended
- Long pants are recommended—some trails pass through underbrush or brambles
- Dress in layers—the mornings may be cool, but you warm up as your body moves
- Apply sunscreen and wear a hat—please be cautious with our bright sun
- Water bottle—available at the front desk
- Camera
Safety Reminders
- The spa is in the mountains at an elevation of 5100 feet. It may take you a couple of days to acclimate to the altitude.
- Please dress appropriately and carry a full water bottle.
- Don't try to do too much. Unless you're a very experienced hiker, don't try the most difficult hike on your very first day. Ease into it... after all, you're at Rio Caliente to relax.
